In the trading era Itu's beach was a meeting point of worlds: Efik, Ibibio and Aro exchanged goods there, and the creek carried the commerce onward toward Arochukwu. It later became a mission frontier — Mary Slessor worked from Itu in her final years, and the famous leprosy settlement founded there in 1928 made the town's name known far beyond the river.
