The Aro of Arochukwu ran the great trading network that linked the Cross River to the Niger, with Old Calabar among its stations. The plate draws that network as a route map — every road remembers its traders.

History

The Aro confederacy rose at Arochukwu in the late 17th century from an alliance of Igbo, Ibibio and Akpa peoples, and built the most far-reaching commercial network in the eastern hinterland. Their authority travelled with the oracle Ibini Ukpabi — known to the British as the "Long Juju" — whose judgments were respected across Igboland and beyond, giving Aro traders safe passage on every road. Aro colonies and market stations threaded from the Cross River to the Niger until 1901–1902, when the British Aro Expedition destroyed the oracle shrine to break their hold on the interior trade.
