Zazzau settled its succession differently: not one dynasty but several royal houses taking the throne of Zaria in turn. The Bornawa are one of those houses — their name remembering the road their forebears travelled in from the Borno country before they rose to rule in the new emirate. A throne shared is a throne remembered longer.

The plate is a lance register — ranks of thrown lances — with the Borno crescent set among them in slate, the eastern moon over a western throne.
