History

Enwang — Mbo in the old count — stands among the original seven clans of the Efik migration from Uruan. Its people were fishers of the tidal water, masters of the staked weir that reads the river's rise and fall and turns the current itself into a harvest. Thinned by the upheavals of the pre-colonial centuries, Enwang's lineages were carried into the surviving Efik houses, but the clan's place in the seven is fixed in tradition, and communities bearing the Enwang and Mbo names still stand in the estuary country today.
