History

Ifako holds its seat among the eight Efut clans, heir to the craftsman's side of the Balondo inheritance. Alongside fishing, the Efut were makers — mat-weavers, canoe-carvers, builders in raffia and thatch — and the woven mat carried meaning beyond use: it was seat, bed, wrapper for the dead and floor of ceremony, the quiet infrastructure of estuary life. Ifako's plate is the weaver's grid because a clan, like a mat, is single strands crossed until they hold: the Efut nation's own pattern, drawn small.
