History

Ikot Ansa, known as Nkonib in the Qua nation's own roster, is one of the principal Ejagham Qua clans of Calabar Municipality, its lands now threaded through the modern city's neighborhoods. Like all Qua clans it kept the forest inheritance — the sacred grove at the settlement's heart, the Mgbe lodge, the Ntoe's stool — institutions that governed land and law long before municipal boundaries were drawn over them. The grove on this plate is that memory: the trees that stood before the streets, and the clan that still holds title beneath both.
