Before the banners, there was the road in. The Jobawa are remembered as among the earliest Fulɓe settlers in the Kano country, established east of the city generations before the jihad — the clan that made first contact with Hausaland and stayed. When the new order came, they were already home, and the office of Makama of Kano became theirs.

The plate draws the eastern gate: a single arch over a dotted road running through it, with the gate's watchers marked beneath — the door they entered first, held ever since.
