The Yolawa stand among the Fulɓe houses of Kano counted in the founding of the emirate — a jihad-era clan whose name is carried in the city's traditional offices to this day. In the survey's language they are the standard-bearers: the ones whose flag rode when the banners were given out at Sokoto and carried east.

The plate is a standard count — rows of small pennant marks in formation, one in rust for the flag that flew at the taking of the city.
