History

The Efut nation traces its crossing from Usak Edet in the Rio del Rey country of Cameroon, Balondo seafarers who took to open water and made Calabar their landfall generations before the Atlantic trade. Their eight clans kept the sea crafts — canoe-building, deep fishing, hunting the mangrove country — and their settlement claim at Calabar ranks among the oldest on the estuary. United under the Muri Munene, the Efut stand with the Efik and Qua as the third founding nation of Calabar, their Cameroon kinship still remembered on both shores of the water they crossed.
