The Efut are the Balondo people who crossed from Usak Edet to settle in Calabar. The plate is drawn as a passage log of the crossing from the east.

History

The Efut crossed the water from Usak Edet (Isangele) in the Rio del Rey country of present-day Cameroon, kin to the Balondo peoples of that coast, and made landfall at Calabar before the trading era reshaped the estuary. Tradition credits Efut and Qua settlement as preceding the Efik towns, making them foundation peoples of Calabar rather than latecomers. Their memory of the eastern crossing is kept in lineage and ceremony, and the Efut remain one of Calabar's three constituent nations under their own Muri Munene.
