History

Efik tradition counts seven original clans, but history was not gentle with all of them. Enwang, Usukakpa and Abayen — remembered together under the old settlement of Ekpe Atai — were diminished by the wars, epidemics and upheavals of the pre-colonial centuries, their surviving people absorbed into the stronger houses of Creek Town and Duke Town. Their names endure in genealogies, oral history and the count of the seven, and this plate stands as their memorial: a people is not lost while its name is still drawn on the map.
