History

Ibonda keeps its place among the eight clans of the Efut nation, descended from the Balondo crossing out of Usak Edet and settled in the Calabar country the Efut helped found. Its emblem is the hearth because that is how a migrating people measures arrival: the fire lit in a new land, tended without going out, generation to generation. In Efut custom the hearth is lineage itself — and Ibonda's fire, carried over open water from the Cameroon shore, still burns in the count of the eight under the Muri Munene.
