History
Itu commands the confluence where Enyong Creek pours into the Cross River — a junction that made it one of the great markets of the eastern country. In the trading era Itu's beach was a meeting point of worlds: Efik, Ibibio and Aro exchanged goods there, and the creek carried the commerce onward toward Arochukwu. It later became a mission frontier — Mary Slessor worked from Itu in her final years, and the famous leprosy settlement founded there in 1928 made the town's name known far beyond the river. Where waters meet, peoples meet: that has always been Itu.
