History

The Okobo hold the peninsula between the Cross River estuary and the creeks, one of the five peoples of the Oro nation yet speaking a language of their own — proof of how finely this coast divides its identities. Fishers and canoe traders, they worked the weirs and channels of both shores, provisioning the estuary trade that ran between Oron beach and Calabar. Small in number, exact in boundary, the Okobo kept their land and tongue through every era of larger neighbours — the peninsula people, still holding the point.
