History

Uruan, on the east bank of the Cross River in today's Akwa Ibom, is remembered in Efik tradition as the homeland the Efik left before founding Calabar — the departure point of the great canoe migration. An Ibibio-speaking waterside people, the Uruan lived by net and paddle, fishing the river and trading along it long before and after the Efik crossing. That shared origin still binds Uruan and Efik in kinship claims, contested and honored in equal measure, across the estuary world.
