The Wodaabe are the farthest riders of the burtol — nomadic Fulɓe of the Lake Chad borderlands who never settled behind city walls. While fifteen clans took thrones, books, and offices, the Wodaabe kept the old way whole: the open sky, the herd, the long transhumance, and pulaaku — the Fulɓe code of patience, restraint, and dignity — carried entire. They are the living baseline of this collection.

The plate is a tengaade count: rows of the wide conical herder's hat, three in rust among the ink — the few among the many who stayed on the road. Its caption reads THE LONG ROAD · NO WALLS, because a fixed address would be false to a people defined by movement.
