History

Ito took the higher ground back from the riverbank — the upland where the Efik world shades into Ibibio farm country. Away from the ship trade of the estuary towns, Ito's wealth was worked from the soil: yam mounds, oil palm and the steady rhythm of the farming year, feeding the coastal towns that fed the Atlantic commerce. The rising mounds of this plate are its signature — the clan that proved the Efik nation was never only a people of the water.
