Uruan holds the east bank of the Cross River — the crossing through which Efik tradition traces its migration toward Calabar. History

Uruan is the hinge of two histories: an Ibibio-speaking waterside people of the Cross River's east bank, and the homeland from which Efik tradition traces the great canoe migration to Calabar. That departure made Uruan the ancestor-country of a nation it did not follow — kinship claimed on both charts, honored and argued over ever since. In their own right the Uruan remained masters of the river: fishers, canoe people and keepers of the crossing itself, the water where one people became two without ceasing to be family.
